Comparison

Gili Air vs Gili Trawangan — which island for diving?

In one paragraph

Gili Air and Gili Trawangan are two of the three Gili Islands off northwest Lombok, Indonesia. Both share the same reef system — boat rides between dive sites take 5-15 min regardless of which island you stay on. The choice is about accommodation atmosphere, not access to diving: Gili Trawangan has parties and the closest boat to Manta Point; Gili Air is quieter, more residential, and family-friendlier.

  Gili Air Gili Trawangan
Atmosphere Quiet, residential, family-friendly Lively, party scene, backpacker hub
Dive sites accessible 20+ sites, all 5-15 min by boat Same 20+ sites — minor 5 min boat ride difference
Manta Point access Same boat ride, 15-20 min Closest island, 10-15 min
Hans Reef access Closest — Hans Reef is the Gili Air house reef 15 min by boat
Family-friendly High — quieter beaches, fewer parties Medium — concentrated bars in centre
Restaurant variety Good — ~50 cafes/restaurants Best — ~150+ options

Our recommendation

For diving-first travellers, Gili Air. The dive-site access is identical, the boat sequencing is logistically the same, and you get quieter evenings. For party-first divers, Gili Trawangan — the bar scene is meaningfully bigger, and you save 5–10 min of boat ride to Manta Point.

Common questions

If I dive every day, does it matter which island I stay on?
Not really. The boat sequencing means we typically hit 2–3 different dive sites per day spread across all three islands. The boat ride between Gili Air and the Trawangan-side sites is 10–15 minutes.
I want a quiet honeymoon plus daily diving — which?
Gili Air. Accommodation skews quieter; Trawangan's noise level after dark is real and isn't confined to "party zones".
How do I move between the islands?
Public boat (Gili-to-Gili shuttle) costs ~50,000 IDR and runs ~3 times a day. Private boat charter is available on request. Crossings take 10–20 min each way.
